Today, the Minister of Health made an extremely important official announcement that aims to clarify for millions of Romanians across the country a series of extremely worrying information that put the deaths of 4 babies from Cluj-Napoca and 5 adults from Targu Mures on account of nosocomial infections in hospitals.

The Minister of Health says in a press release, published by the institution he leads, that there are no links between these deaths and nosocomial infections, stating that the ministry he leads constantly takes measures to prevent these types of infections don't kill people in hospitals in Romania.

"The Ministry was informed on October 14, 2022, at 16.00:6 p.m., about the existence of an outbreak of IAM with 5 cases, of which 8 resulted in death, starting on October XNUMX. The Minister of Health, Alexandru Rafila, ordered the immediate travel of the Secretary of State Adriana Pistol to Târgu Mureș to check the situation on the spot and ensure that the measures taken are the correct ones.

According to the medical data provided by the Târgu Mureș County Clinical Hospital under the Mureș County Council, the patients who died had multiple pathologies and long-term hospitalizations in the intensive care unit. They were in critical condition at the time of admission to the ATI ward, which is why they required multiple invasive medical maneuvers, including ventilator support. The germs isolated from the outbreak were multi-resistant Piocyanic and Acinetobacter.

On the occasion of the visit, hospitalizations in the ATI ward were suspended, and surgical interventions were stopped; immediately started the cleaning and disinfection activity of the ward, samples were collected for the bacteriological evaluation of the existing patients in the ward and of the medical staff. It was decided that staff throughout the hospital would be retrained on cleaning and disinfection measures, hand hygiene, use of protective equipment and waste management. The results of the samples collected from the patients in the intensive care unit were negative.

At the request of the Ministry of Health, DSP Cluj, respectively the Cluj-Napoca County Emergency Clinical Hospital, informed that in the neonatology department a death was registered in a premature child with multiple medical problems and who was infected with the Serattia marcensens bacterium.

From the epidemiological investigation carried out, it appears that there were no other AIAMs recorded in the neonatology ward in the same month (September 2022), as well as no other deaths caused by AIAMs. There is no information of any kind regarding 4 deaths, as erroneously circulated in the public space."
