Minister of Energy LAST MINUTE Measures Voted Today Announced to Romanians

Today the Minister of Energy made an extremely important official announcement that concerns millions of people, and this is because an extremely serious decision regarding Romania's energy situation has been taken, and below you can see that it is about keeping coal-based electricity production capacity.

The Minister of Energy talks below about Romania's plans not to give up these production capacities, but on the contrary, to invest even more in others designed to produce even more energy for Romania in the coming years, so it remains to be seen how will unfold everything.

"We are NOT closing any coal-based electricity production unit, but, on the contrary, we are investing in modernization and preparing for the future. That is why I want to thank my fellow deputies for the votes to adopt the law for the approval of the Government's Emergency Ordinance no. 108/2022 regarding the decarbonization of the energy sector.

This law establishes measures to mitigate the social consequences of the closure and conservation of lignite and coal-based electricity production capacities and related quarries and mines, the establishment of funding sources for state aid measures, as well as measures for the coordination and the implementation of the decarbonization process.

For the coordination and implementation of the decarbonization process, the Interministerial Coal Committee, the Advisory Committee and the Working Group for the coordination and monitoring of the implementation of the established measures, as well as the possibility of restarting the closed energy groups, are established, by the decision of the Romanian Government and at the proposal of the Ministry of Energy, in energy crisis situation and in correlation with the measures included in the emergency plans related to the energy sector.

Important to remember: For the purposes of this emergency ordinance, the technical reserve means the power reserve provided in order to replace the unavailable groups for which there are electricity contracts or to be at the disposal of the transport and system operator, the National Transport Company of Energiei Electrice «Transelectrica» – SA for situations in which the adequacy of the national electricity system cannot be ensured through the electricity market."

According to the Restructuring Plan of the Oltenia Energy Complex, approved by the European Commission through Decision C(2022) 553 final of January 26, 2022, for which financing was obtained from the Modernization Fund in the amount of 897 million euros, with the participation of the Oltenia Energy Complex, be made new investments in natural gas capacities and renewable energy sources."
