Austria Unveils New Official Conditions Allowing Romania's Schengen Accession

Austria has revealed the new official conditions that will allow Romania to join Schengen, the lifting of the veto given on December 8 in the JAI Council being dependent on what the Minister of the Interior, Gerhard Karner, now says must happen, of course separately from the reduction of requests for asylum registered by his country, something previously stated.

Austria, according to the discrepancies given by Karner in a recent interview for the country's press, demands that the Schengen system works, and that the measures to check migrants are respected at its borders, so that those who enter the Schengen area are correctly identified, and those with no chance of receiving asylum, to be rejected directly.

Austria says that the Schengen system does not work now, and that there are border controls from Hungary to France due to the large number of migrants, accusing that many pass through Romania, Serbia and Bulgaria to reach various areas in Europe, but the Austrians would receive the most requests today, which is not convenient for them.

"The protection of external borders must be improved from a technical point of view - with robust barriers - but also from a legal point of view. Some kind of rejection policy is needed, so that those who have no chance of asylum but are a burden on the reception system can be rejected more quickly.

How do migrants get to Hungary? Through Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia. This is the route. That means everyone has to do more. That is why Austria offers massive support. And we are already seeing success: from October to November, the number of arrivals in Austria dropped by about a third. The fact that we put the brakes on the asylum is starting to take effect."
