Austria allies itself with the Netherlands regarding the migration crisis in Europe, and following a meeting between Chancellor Karl Nehammer and Prime Minister Mark Rutte, the two countries strengthened their position before the European Commission regarding requests related to the reform of the asylum system , which of course puts into even greater discussion Romania's accession to Schengen in the near future.
Austria has a position similar to that of the Netherlands when it comes to the substantial reduction of the number of migrants from Europe, but also to the reform of the asylum system, both countries demanding fast and firm actions from the European Commission in the next period, otherwise both Romania and and Bulgaria risks not joining the Schengen area too soon, unfortunately.
Austria continues to talk about more intense border controls, new fences built on the border between Bulgaria and Turkey, plus changes to the asylum system so that it no longer gives migrants hope of receiving asylum in Europe, and to convince them not to try anymore to reach the continent, but it is not known what changes CE will want to make.
"Our two countries are not only friendly, but also connected in content when it comes to combating illegal migration. We are both united in our reservations about Schengen enlargement at the moment.
The first success of our initiative was that we organized a special summit of heads of government in February. It is about us admitting that we have big problems in the Schengen system, given the current border controls. We will talk about what options the EU has to better protect its external borders in the future."
