Romania continues to make serious efforts and implement extremely important initiatives for the completion of Schengen accession with land borders, but despite all the recent promises, it is still unclear when the objective could be achieved, considering that there are still discussions vis- à-vis the lifting of the veto given by Austria.
Romania has made a lot of progress regarding the completion of Schengen accession, but unfortunately, Austria has not yet confirmed that it will lift the veto, Minister Gerhard Karner confirming to Minister Catalin Predoiu that the prospects are good, but there is still a need of discussions and implementation of measures, in order to reach the desired result.
Romania is doing everything it can to fulfill Austria's complaints in order to lift the veto and allow the Schengen accession to be completed, but the Austrians are not yet willing to give up their claims, so regardless of what is said from the Victoria Palace, Minister Catalin Predoiu states that the fulfillment of the objective in 2024 is not ensured.
"The file, although it has a good perspective, is still being worked on. It's brewing, I could say, that is, it's discussed, negotiated, meetings are prepared, ideas are exchanged. The staffs work with each other, communicate, it is not a file that sits and from time to time is resumed, it is a file that is constantly being worked on.
Every week, something is done in this Interior, Foreign, that is, the line ministries that act. At the political level, also discussions, the president has political discussions, the prime minister has political discussions, colleagues from the EPP, from the PNL have political discussions, probably the socialists also have political discussions, everyone is working, so it is a file that Romania addressed very responsible."
