Minister of Defense, Angel Tilvar, announced that, during the meeting of defense ministers from NATO member states, which took place in Brussels, Romania signed two letters of intent regarding participation in projects to develop state-of-the-art capabilities in the air field.
Minister of Defense points out that these initiatives aim to develop and put into service more effective solutions for combating low-altitude aerial threats, as well as the implementation of passive capabilities dedicated to airspace surveillance.
Angel Tilvar stressed the importance of pooling expertise and resources by allied states joining the two projects, a measure that will allow for the rapid identification of the most promising technological solutions, optimizing both costs and implementation time.
"Romania will benefit from state-of-the-art solutions, which will complement the capabilities currently in place or which will be provided through the acquisition programs already in preparation," the defense minister said. This step is part of Romania's commitment to actively contribute to strengthening the deterrence and defense posture of the NATO Alliance.
The Minister of Defense reports that, in addition to technological aspects, the Brussels meeting was an important opportunity to reaffirm allied unity and solidarity. Minister Tilvar mentioned that, in addition to the support provided to Ukraine, NATO leaders discussed the need for resources for the long-term transformation of the Alliance, emphasizing the importance of fair distribution of risks and responsibilities.
In a bilateral meeting, the defense minister sent a message of appreciation to his Spanish counterpart, Margarita Robles Fernandez, expressing gratitude for Spain's firm commitment to Romania's security. "I welcomed Spain's military activity and participation in the Allied Battle Group in Romania, led by France, as well as in the air policing missions in our country," Tilvar emphasized.
Angel Tilvar reiterated the strategic importance of the Black Sea region for European and Euro-Atlantic security, emphasizing that, in the current security context, bilateral collaboration and multilateralism remain fundamental for the effective response to current and future challenges.
Romania thus shows itself ready to assume its role in developing military capabilities, actively contributing to strengthening NATO's joint efforts to ensure a common security space and robust defense.
