Victor Ponta: Message After Meeting with Donald Trump Jr. and Promises for Millions of Romanians

Victor Ponta's Message After Meeting Donald Trump Jr. Promises Millions of Romanians

Victor Ponta, candidate for the Presidency of Romania, reiterated that our country should not be put in the position of choosing between the Euro-Atlantic West and the European Union. "Romania must choose the good of Romanians!", he said, emphasizing that maintaining European attachment does not exclude strengthening the strategic relationship with the United States of America.

"We are and remain Europeans; but the military security of Romania and Europe does not exist without a strong partnership with the United States of America. Our security against Russia, our freedom of expression and political freedom depend on this partnership", Ponta explained, adding that, as the future president, he will put at the service of the country "all his personal relationships and international experience to keep the US by Romania's side."

Victor Ponta brought back into discussion the pension cuts made in 2010: "Then they cut pensions to defend the privileges and corruption of politicians! In 2025 they want to do the same!" Ponta recalled that, as Prime Minister, he guaranteed the indexation of all pensions, including military ones, promising to do the same as President, "defending the pensions of Romanians cut again by another incompetent and corrupt government."

His criticism also targeted the capping of energy prices and RCA, which he described as an illusion by which Romanians "were lied to." Ponta drew attention to the fact that, once the protection measures expire on July 1, "prices will explode" and accused the current government of not assuming any responsibility towards consumers: "Romanians are once again left alone to pay the bill for their incompetence and corruption. I do not accept that Romania is treated like this!"

Victor Ponta also provided details about his participation in the Trump Business Vision 2025 conference in Sofia, dedicated to crypto technologies. Ponta reported that he met with Donald Trump Jr. to discuss economic prospects in the region and expressed confidence in the visit that he will make in the coming days to Bucharest.

"It is very important for Romania to be in the spotlight of the US business community. It is also essential to develop personal and unofficial relations with the Trump administration," he said.

The economy and public finances were brought to attention by Victor Ponta, who said that in the first three months of 2025, the state borrowed an additional 9 billion euros, without supplementing the pensions, allowances, or incomes of the military and mayors.

Paying one billion euros every ten days would, in his opinion, serve "corruption, incompetence and bankruptcy", not for investments in hospitals, schools or infrastructure. Victor Ponta also says that Romania currently has the largest debts in the European Union, which have reached 200 billion euros in the last decade, of which 50 billion in 2024 alone, "under the PSD-PNL-UDMR governments".

Victor Ponta concluded with a call for civic and political responsibility: "Romania cannot continue like this. We must put Romanians and their future first. Not debts and theft!" Designating the fight against corruption and incompetence as essential conditions for economic and social recovery, he reaffirmed his commitment to recreate "a strong Romania, respected in Europe and across the Atlantic."
