National Meteorological Administration, ANM, has published breaking weather warnings for Romania on July 27, 2025, bringing to our immediate attention a weather forecast with several weather warnings targeting an extreme heat wave, atmospheric instability and violent phenomena in most of Romania.

ANM states that a first code red weather warning came into effect on July 26, at 10:00, and targets Banat, Oltenia, most of Muntenia and southern continental Dobrogea.

In these regions, the heat wave will intensify to severe heatwave conditions, with maximum temperatures reaching 39…43 °C. Thermal discomfort will be particularly pronounced, with the temperature-humidity index (ITU) set to exceed the critical threshold of 80 units. Nights will be tropical, with minimums of 22…25 °C.

Also starting at 10:00, the ANM launched the Orange Code weather warning for Crișana, Transylvania (in the majority), northeastern Wallachia, southern Moldova and northern continental Dobrogea. In these areas, the persistent heat wave will bring thermal values of 35…39 °C, and the temperature-humidity index will again exceed the critical threshold of 80 units. Nighttime minimums will oscillate between 18 and 22 °C, favoring tropical nights locally.

For the rest of the territory, the National Meteorological Agency has issued a Code Yellow weather warning, valid for northern Crișana, Maramureș, northeastern Transylvania, northern and central Moldova, as well as on the coast. Here, heatwaves and high thermal discomfort are expected, with values of 33…36 °C and ITU slightly above the critical threshold. Minimum temperatures will be between 17 and 20 °C. Meteorologists state that, from Sunday to Monday, the heat wave will gradually narrow to the south and east.

The National Meteorological Agency has also issued two new atmospheric instability warnings, also starting on July 26, at 17:00 p.m. The first, Code Yellow, targets Banat, Crișana, Maramureș, a large part of Transylvania, Oltenia and the northern half of Moldova. In these areas, periods of increased wind – gusts of 60…70 km/h – storms, lightning, hail of 2–4 cm and torrential showers that can accumulate 20…25 l/sq m, isolated over 30 l/sq m.

The second warning, code orange, concerns the same regions and includes Banat, Crișana, Maramureș, western and northern Transylvania and western Oltenia. The dangerous phenomena will manifest themselves through strong storms, with gusts of 70…90 km/h, medium and large hail (2–5 cm), frequent electrical discharges and torrential downpours that can accumulate 25…40 l/sq m in intervals of 1–3 hours and locally over 50 l/sq m.

The ANM recommendations emphasize the importance of adapting the daily schedule to avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during critical hours, constant hydration and ensuring cool indoor spaces. At the same time, in areas with pronounced atmospheric instability, the ANM recommends caution outdoors, avoiding travel near trees and power lines and adapting the speed when driving.

In the context of these weather warnings issued by the ANM, local and central authorities are prepared to intervene to manage emergency situations, and the population is urged to constantly consult the official ANM website for updates and additional details.
