Why iPad will not allow GSM calls or 3G traffic in Romania at the moment

For now, the only signals that would allow making calls GSM are the menus from iPad Simulator included in firmware 3.2, but taking into account that details were found regarding the existence of a camera on iPad in the same simulator, there could be only a few elements left by Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), in a possible conversion of the simulator. Everyone was waiting now for a short time after the launch the iPad to find a jailbreak method and a solution that allows making calls GSM using the new toy from Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), and that would be a wonderful thing, but very unlikely from my point of view.

With the iPad, Apple also introduced a new standard for cards SIMs.. Which will use iPad is a Micro SIM recently created by ETSI (European Telecommunications Standard Institute) which in terms of dimensions is approximately 52% smaller than a normal SIM and from the point of view of those from AT&T is much better than a software solution to block the tablet in a certain network. Why do they say that? Simple! Because the Micro SIM is a standard that is currently far from being used by telephone operators around the world, but more than that it is impossible to use with a normal phone. Practically, the respective Micro SIM can only be used with the iPad and will only have data traffic attached, no GSM, no nothing. Using another card is impossible because it does not fit in the iPad, software solutions would be useless because there would be no place to insert the card, the only solution would be a hardware one, an accessory attached to the SIM tray of the iPad in which a normal SIM should be introduced, a not very elegant solution and probably difficult to put into practice on a large scale.

Considering that only the operators that will sell the iPad will offer the respective SIMs, you will be tied to a Romanian operator to be able to use it on 3G, and if an activation is also needed, things get quite complicated. Be very careful, don't rush after an iPad with your eyes closed, you'll cry for 3G later.

The iPad doesn't sound so promising now does it? Considering that many people are a bit disappointed with the iPad, it is not known how long it will take until a jailbreak/unlock appears, so the owners remain at the mercy of Apple.

One more thing, in Europe the iPad will only appear in March, in Romania Orange is silent, if you take the version with 3G you will have to wait a long time until Orange adopts the new standard and you will be able to use it on 3G.
