Vimeo switches to HTML5 support

Vimeo, one of the largest video sharing sites in the world, announced today that it has remade its video player to work exclusively in HTML5, thus giving up the old flash that unfortunately does not work on iOS. The new video player will work without problems on iOS, but also on other platforms for smartphones, having the ability to detect each individual device and adjust the quality of the video clip according to the capacity of each terminal.

"With the latest generation of browsers and devices, we've had huge demand for an embeddable player that works with HTML5 and on devices like iPad and iPhone."

This is the first big step taken towards eliminating flash from video sharing sites, but an even bigger blow will be given when YouTube completely abandons flash in favor of HTML5. YouTube has been working for some time on modifying the video player to be 100% compatible with the HTML5 standard, but considering the size of the YouTube site, it is rather difficult to make radical changes so quickly. If Apple doesn't follow Flash, then websites follow HTML5, and that's a good thing because we will have more and more content on the screens of our terminals.
