I told you last week that BlackBerry ready a new Internet tablet and that the presentation will take place during this week's conference, well, this happened and now we have a presentation video for the BlackBerry PlayBook. I for one am more than impressed with the operating system that the PlayBook runs on and this is probably a warning to Apple that they should seriously think about some major changes in the design of the future iOS 5. The new tablet of the RIM will see a 1Ghz dual-core processor, it will be able to do multitasking, it has flash support, it is announced to be a modern internet tablet and able to compete directly with current tablets, but the only thing I don't like it's the design. I know that it is a tablet mainly dedicated to business people, but it seems that it looks much too serious and has a too square design.

Here are the specifications of the BlackBerry PlayBook:

  • 7-inch WSVGA capacitive LCD screen with 1024 x 600px resolution and support for gestures;
  • BlackBerry Tablet OS with support for symmetric multiprocessing;
  • 1Ghz dual-core processor;
  • 1 GB RAM;
  • two HD cameras capable of recording video in 1080p format (a 3 MP front camera and a 5 MP rear camera);
  • Video playback: 1080p HD Video, H.264, MPEG, DivX, WMV;
  • Audio playback: MP3, AAC, WMA;
  • HDMI port;
  • Wi-Fi – 802.11 a/b/g/n;
  • Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR;
  • Connectors: microHDMI, microUSB, and charging port;
  • The tablet will have support for WebKit/HTML-5, Adobe Flash Player 10.1, Adobe Mobile AIR, Adobe Reader, POSIX, OpenGL, Java;
  • Probable dimensions 130mm x 193mm x 10mm;
  • Weight: around 400g;
  • Operating system: BlackBerry OS.

Unfortunately, the PlayBook will only be available in 2011, so it will compete directly with the iPad 2 and probably iOS 4.3 or 5.0, depending on the time of year it will be available. I, for one, can't wait for the release and hope that Apple prepares something much better in the meantime and releases it before the PlayBook.
