Safari knows how to use the gyroscope, we have augmented reality in the browser!

I told you almost a month ago that Safari from iOS 4.2.1 has implemented some APIs that allow it to use the gyroscope integrated in the iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4G terminals. Well, now a company has managed to find a way to use this gyroscope in Safari to show us a small demo of how augmented reality technology can be used in Safari. Accessing this website from an iPhone 4 or iPod Touch 4G you will notice that you can use the gyroscope to navigate through that panoramic image included in the demonstration.

The image is part of the 360 Panorama application, an application that allows us to view panoramic images, filmed at a 360-degree angle, using the integrated gyroscope of our terminals. The idea itself is very innovative and separates iDevices from the rest of the smartphones on the market. Using AR web developers could build web applications to present panoramic images as in the demonstration above and it would be interesting to see something like this for museums for example.

Only Safari from iOS 4.2.1 allows you to view that demo and only an iPhone 4/iPod Touch 4G have gyroscope included.
