iPad 2 and iPhone 5 could have dual-core graphics chip

The other day we told you that in iOS 4.3 information was discovered indicating that the future model of the iPad tablet could have a graphics processor POWERVR SGX543 produced by Imagination Technologies. Yesterday I wrote an article in which we presented other information discovered in iOS 4.3 beta 1, but this time we were talking about icons specially made for Retina Display, icons that indicated the fact that the iPad tablet could have double resolution compared to the current fashion.

Based on these details, those from AppleInsider managed to obtain, from sources close to Apple, information about the graphic chips that the company would implement in the iPad 2 and iPhone 5. It seems that the POWERVR SGX543 will be used in the iPad 2 and iPhone 5 tablets , but it would be about dual-core graphics chips with much more powerful hardware than those available in current iDevices.

A source familiar with Apple's graphics strategy says the company will not only be upgrading its video core, but also going to multiple cores, a feature that is designed into the SGX543 design. The most likely configuration of Apple's next custom chip is reportedly the SGX543MP2, which pairs two SGX543 cores to work as one, offering around four times the capability of the previous A4 in graphics and video tasks.

If this information is true, then the implementation of Retina Display on the iPad could be hindered only by the costs necessary to produce this type of screens. This new graphics chip would be powerful enough to run media content even at 2048×1536 resolution, and together with a dual-core processor would probably offer the same performance as the Nvidia Tegra 2 platform.
