2.4 – 2.6 million iPad 2 tablets sold in March

Everyone knows that iPad 2 is selling like hot cakes, but the big question is how many tablets did Apple manage to sell in the 3 weeks, how many tablets were available on the market? According to those from DigiTimes Apple would have managed to sell no less than 2.4 - 2.6 million iPad tablets in March, an absolutely impressive figure for the market to which the tablet is addressed. In the 9 months of availability during 2010, iPad 2 was sold in 15 million copies, and the iPad 2 generated a fifth of those sales in less than a month. DigiTimes talks about iPad 2 "delivered" tablets, i.e. delivered by Apple to its customers, so we can call them sales.

A sufficient supply of cover lenses for touch panel modules will be the key for Apple and other vendors to reach their shipment goals for tablet PCs in second-quarter 2011, according to sources at upstream touch panel suppliers. Sales of iPad 2 are running at a faster rate than its predecessor, and Apple took delivery of 2.4-2.6 million units in March, the sources noted.

Based on a conservative estimate, Apple is likely to take delivery of 4-4.3 million units a month, or a total of over 12 million units, of iPad 2 tablets in the second quarter, said the sources.

The numbers are very interesting, but more interesting is the fact that the Motorola Xoom would be sold in only 100.000 copies so far, at least that's what Business Insider claims. If it is true, then Apple has once again managed to surpass its competition in all aspects, and not even a united effort of several large tablet manufacturers seems to dethrone the iPad 2 from the leading position on the tablet PC market.
