Apple launches a new $999 iMac version

During this morning I told you that Apple could launch a new version of the famous iMac and this happened shortly after the publication of that article. The new product was discovery in the Apple Store by those from macrumours, but officially Apple did not make any announcement about its launch but published a document with the hardware specifications of the new product. The new iMac is available in the offer dedicated to the university educational environment, so it cannot be purchased by individuals or viewed in the Apple Online Store dedicated to individuals. Here is the configuration of the new iMac:

  • 3.1GHz Intel Core i3 Dual-Core
  • 21.5-inch LCD
  • AMD Radeon HD 6750 with 256MB
  • RAM 2GB
  • 250GB Hard Drive
  • SuperDrive
  • OS X Lion

The cheapest iMac available to private customers costs $1199, but that product has a quad core Intel i5 processor, 2 times the HDD and double the amount of RAM. From my point of view, the price difference does not reflect the difference in performance, that is, for another $200 more, users get much better performance than in the case of the new iMac, so the offer made by Apple is only worth considering in the case in which the difference of $200 would be a problem for the customer.
