Apple sued because of patents related to Wi-Fi technology

Although we are used to Apple suing various companies in court for IMPLIED patent infringements, so Wi-Lan has decided to sue Apple for the infringement of 2 patents related to Wi-Fi technology. Apple together with Alcatel-Lucent, Dell, Hewlett Packard, HTC, Kyocera, Novatel and Sierra Wireless have to face the Wi-Lan company which claims that these patents US Patent No. RE 37,802 si US Patent No. 5,282,222 were knowingly violated by the companies named above in the construction of electronic devices.

Canadian technology licensing company WiLan Inc said on Friday it had begun its patent infringement cases against Apple Inc, Dell, Hewlett-Packard and six other companies. WiLan said the companies infringed two of its patents related to telecom, Wi-Fi and the rapidly expanding Long Term Evolution (LTE) technology. Shares of WiLan, which is currently in hostile pursuit of peer Mosaid Technologies, closed at C$7.06 on Thursday on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

Of course, the chances that Apple will be forced to pay for the licensing of those technologies to Wi-Lan are small, but the Canadian company seems interested in extracting some money from the companies presented above. Apple is always careful to implement technologies that are either free or patented by companies with which it has concluded an agreement, so such processes are rarely successful.
