Unreal Engine 3 will be available for the Mac OS X platform

The Mac OS X operating system is recognized as being "forgotten" by game developers, preferring consoles and PCs, and this was one of the main reasons why many gamers preferred not to switch to the operating system of those from Apple. Well things are slowly starting to change because Epic Games announced the launch of the Unreal Development Kit for Mac OS X, a software suite that will allow the development of games for Mac OS X using the Unreal Engine 3 graphics engine already ported to the iOS platform.

September 19, 2010 – Epic Games, Inc. has released the September 2011 UDK Beta, the latest version of the Unreal Development Kit (UDK), the free edition of Unreal Engine 3 that provides access to the award-winning toolset used in blockbuster video games, 3D visualizations, digital films and more. This month, we are thrilled to ship a new and improved UDK, now with Mac support.

What does this mean for ordinary users? For now, nothing because it will be at least 1 year before we see a game seriously developed for the Apple platform. The good part is that things are starting to move and soon we will see in the Mac App Store not only games ported from iOS to Mac OS X but "real" games very well made and comparable to those available on consoles or on PC- hate. I, for one, am happy with the announcement and I hope that game developers will move as quickly as possible in adopting new technologies.
