Siri for iPhone 4S has changed the perception of users regarding the tasks that can be performed on a mobile phone but even on a Mac. Some have wondered if the Siri functionality can be transferred to Mac OS X, but those who wondered this did not know that Apple implemented already a similar system in OS X Lion (perhaps also in the old versions of iOS). Apple's system is called Speakable Items and it can basically do everything that Siri does, but it has certain functions in addition to Apple's assistant.

The video clip above describes the functionality of the new system that you can activate from System Preferences>Speech>Speakable Items. Using this voice command recognition system, we can empty the trash bin, write an entry in the calendar, send emails, open a browser, save documents, hide applications, open certain applications, etc. Speakable Items is a very good way to "use Siri" on Mac OS X, but in the version for Macs you will have more commands available.
