Imagination announces the release of possible future graphics chips for our iDevices

Starting with the iPhone 3GS, Apple has annually improved the graphics chips included in its iDevices, and now the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S have the PowerVR SGX543-MP2 dual-core graphics chip produced by the Imagination company. Today the company Imagination announced the launch of the 6th generation of chips from the PowerVR series, chips that could end up in iPhone 5 and iPad 4 (if not even iPad 3). G6400 and G6200 are the names of the two new chips and they bring performances up to 20 times better than those of other chips now available on the market, but they are also 5 times more efficient in terms of energy consumption.

International CES, Las Vegas, USA: Imagination Technologies, a leading multimedia and communication technologies company, announces the first IP cores in its ground-breaking PowerVR Series6 GPU core family. The PowerVR G6200 and G6400 GPU IP cores are the first in a growing family of PowerVR Series6 GPU cores. Delivering the best performance in both GFLOPS/mm2 and GFLOPS/mW, PowerVR Series6 GPUs can deliver 20x or more of the performance of current generation GPU cores targeting comparable markets. This is enabled by an architecture that is around 5x more efficient than previous generations.

Imagination boasts that these chips have the highest number of GFLOPS per mW and per square millimeter and Apple could benefit from them. There are already a lot of companies that have announced their intention to license the technology designed by those from Imagination and I think that Apple will do the same but without announcing anyone.
