KAIST Institute in South Korea published this month a video clip showing a new, extremely interesting interface for e-books. In practice, you can see in the video clip above what Apple should have done for the iBooks application but did not. We are talking about a multitouch interface for ebooks that allows users to interact with a digital book on an iPad tablet almost the same way they would interact with a normal book. The system allows navigating between pages in a way similar to the one in reality and includes the following multitouch gestures that many would like to have in iBooks 2:

  • Page Flipping, by spreading pages and then flipping through
  • Page Flipping with finger bookmarking
  • Multiple page turning using multiple fingers
  • Faster swipes turning multiple pages
  • Longer presses, then swiping can turn multiple pages
  • Writing the page number

The idea is extraordinary and will certainly attract the interest of many, now it remains to be seen if it can be implemented in future books.
