Apple abandons the name Mac OS X starting with OS X Mountain Lion

When the iPad tablet was launched, Apple decided to abandon the name iPhone OS in favor of iOS for the operating system of the new tablet. In the Mountain Lion Apple gives up to the name Mac OS X in favor of OS X, as you can see in the image above. The reason for dropping the word Mac from the name could be related to the fact that the operating system for Macs contains so many elements borrowed by Apple from iOS.

Apple's making a big deal out of Mountain Lion today, but there's an equally big change quietly afoot: the "Mac" in "Mac OS X" is no more. Instead, Apple's desktop operating system is now simply called OS X. We confirmed the official name change with Apple, who told us that the preferred full name is "OS X Mountain Lion," and a quick look around the company's new Mountain Lion pages reveals that the tweak is already well in effect.
