Apple develops a powerful dual-core processor (A5X) and a quad-core processor (A6) for iDevices

A5X and A6 are Apple's new processor chips for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch

Although we found out a lot of information about the new iPad 3 tablet from Apple, unfortunately we do not yet know if it will come with a quad-core processor or a much improved dual-core one. Normally Apple should release this year a new SoC chip called A6 which should theoretically come with a quad-core processor. Unfortunately in one image published a few weeks ago we were shown that Apple would work on a different SoC chip called A5X which seems to contain a much improved dual-core processor compared to the one in the A5 chip available in iPad 2 and iPhone 4S.

A5X chip for iPad 3

After the publication of this image, everyone came to the conclusion that the iPad 3 will not come with a quad-core but with a much improved dual-core, but those from 9to5mac they still give us hope regarding the implementation of the quad-core processor in the new tablet. Almost a month now were published several images in which we were presented with some diagnostic information of an iPad 3 tablet and there it was given to us to understand that Apple would have implemented in that device a processor with the code name S5L8945X. The code given by Apple suggests that the A5X will surely come in the iPad 3 because the iPad 2 has an A5 chip with an S5L8940X processor and for the iPad 3 to come with an A6 and quad-core chip then the processor had to have the name S5L8950X.

Although no one knew until now, last night the picture from the beginning of the article was published and it proves that Apple is testing both a dual-core processor (A5X) which has the code S5L8945X and an alleged quad-core processor (A6) which has the code S5L8950X . Now no one knows which of them Apple will implement in the new iPad 3 tablet, but it is clear that Cupertino is testing several versions of the tablet and I hope that Apple will bring us the best one. The information was discovered inside iOS 5.1 and the two processors could be: one for iPad 3 and one for Apple TV 3G or maybe iPhone 5.
