Apple is fighting with RIM, Nokia and Motorola for Nano-SIM standardization

I told you a few weeks ago that a new SIM model called nano-SIM it will be available on the market in 2012 and it seems that Apple would be the company that will determine how it will look. The nano-SIM is a third smaller than a micro-SIM and currently RIM, Apple, Nokia and Motorola try to convince the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) to adopt this standard, but each company has its own version of the card. For the time being, Apple seems to have the support of most mobile phone operators and it is very likely that it will win the cause in this "battle".

The Sim is crucial to the design of future handsets, with one person with knowledge of the committee saying that the Apple-backed nano-Sim could require a "drawer" to protect it. "Phones would need to be re-engineered with this in mind," the person said. Nokia said that its proposal had "significant technical advantages".

Next week ETSI will choose one of the proposals made so far and the Nokia company has the most votes in the council that makes the decision. Those from Apple tried to improve their chances by including some subsidiary companies in the board, but in the end it remains to be seen who will win. The new nano-SIM could be used in the iPhone 5 terminal and could contribute to reducing the thickness of the device or implementing a larger battery. The space left unoccupied by using this smaller SIM can be used by Apple in a variety of ways but I hope we see a better battery and not a thinner design.
