Apple hires people specialized in the development of 3D technologies

Although until now Apple has registered quite a few patents for 3D technologies, for now none of the most interesting ones has been implemented in the operating system of the American company. Even so, those from Cupertino still employ talented people and a recent one job offer published on its website specifies that Apple needs an engineer specialized in the study of mathematics, physics, etc., but who knows the C programming language and of course has experience in at least one of the fields below:

  • Multi-view stereo and 3D reconstruction
  • Inpainting of occluded geometry and texture data
  • SLAM
  • Mesh texturing techniques
  • Large scale bundle adjustment
  • Cameras and surfaces in a 3D environment

Before you get your hopes up that Apple will give us the possibility to film/watch 3D content in iOS, I recommend you to look at things very calmly because this technology is still very far from maturity and there is not that much 3D content available, so a iDevice equipped with this technology would only help to popularize it. Apple is waiting for the right moment to implement "revolutionary" technologies in its devices and the moment of implementing 3D technology is still far away.

Apple is looking for a Computer Vision specialist to strengthen its multi-view stereo research group. As a member of this team you should have a genuine interest in technology and be a skilled developer with knowledge and experience in Computer Vision, Image Analysis and 3D geometry. To qualify for this position you should have a Ph.D. degree in a Computer Vision related field such as Mathematics, Physics or Computer Science. You should be a confident and experienced C programmer.
