Apple has hired over 20 AMD engineers to develop its own graphics chips

Yesterday I told you that Apple would have employed no less than 12 AMD engineers for a team called Orlando GPU Team, the name of the team coming from the city of Orlando where it is based. In the same city AMD has a research and development center, and Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), hired over 20 engineers of those from AMD, plus quite a few other people specialized in the development of graphics chips, the company's goal being to build its own hardware.

Apple has strategically leased a headquarters near the AMD campus in the city, but Apple intends to build one or more buildings there. Apple intends to gather no less than 40 engineers specialized in the development of graphic chips, they will be led by a team from the Intrinsity company that was bought by Apple, the technology owned by it being implemented in the chip- A4 pages. The graphics chips that Apple is trying to develop will end up in future iDevices, but considering that the company's efforts are just at the beginning, it will certainly be several years before we see notable results.
