Amazon is preparing the launch of a competitor for Apple TV

Amazon is an extremely popular company in the USA, owning one of the largest local online stores, but not only that. Those from Amazon they also entered the market of mobile terminals with several products, and soon they will launch a competitor for Apple TVof those from Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC),. According to the WSJ, Amazon intends to bring this device to the market by the time of the winter holidays, its functionality being similar to that of Apple's product, probably even in terms of the option to transpose the screens of Android terminals onto televisions.

Amazon.com is taking steps towards releasing a video-streaming device in time for the holiday selling season, according to people briefed on the company's plans. The set-top box, which would pit the online retailer against a host of established rivals, is a small device that resembles a Roku player and is similarly styled as a platform to run apps and content from a variety of sources, these people said. It would also serve as a delivery vehicle for Amazon's existing streaming video service—available as part of its Prime membership—which competes with Netflix and has been expanding lately.

The device from Amazon is, to a certain extent, similar to the Roku player, but of course it will allow the streaming of multimedia content purchased from the company's store. Considering that Apple is one of the big players in the set top box market, those from Amazon will have quite tough competition ahead, but it will probably be a long time before they succeed in surpassing Apple in terms of it's about sales.
