Apple Watch - autonomy, Notifications Center, Force Touch, performance and sensors

Apple Watch running app

Just three days before the conference for Apple Watch presentation we find an extremely diverse series of exclusive information obtained from sources within the Apple company, they give us a detailed presentation of everything we will find out on Monday. The details below come from people who have used the Apple Watch for a good amount of time, so it gives a fairly complex picture on to the product that Apple is going to announce.

Apple Watch autonomy

Apple Watch battery

The Apple Watch battery requires daily charging of the watch for constant use, its autonomy allows intensive use for 5 hours every day, while light use offers up to 19 hours of autonomy. Notifications and glances don't consume a lot of battery, but monitoring applications do, so Apple had to improve battery life to make the watch useful. Apple increased the battery autonomy from 2.5 - 4 hours to the previously mentioned 5 hours, but this will not save us from daily charging, Apple implementing a module called Power Reserve to help us keep the watch active when needed.

Power Reserve can be activated through a glance or from the Settings application, the module being accessible even if the Apple Watch is 100% charged, so it is not exclusively dedicated to use when the battery reserve is low. By activating Power Reserve, we reduce the battery autonomy, increase the notification check time and activate the screen closing after two seconds of inactivity, so we basically disable most of the watch's functionality, but we get better autonomy. Unlike iDevices, in the Apple Watch we do not receive alerts for low battery, but we have glances whose colors change when we reach 20% or 10% of the battery, they are intuitively thought to let us understand that we must let's do a reload.

Glances for monitoring heartbeats

Apple Watch Glance for heart rate monitoring

Using the sensor for monitoring the heartbeat, the Apple company created a special glance that can tell us at any time how fast or slow our heart beats, the interface of the glance looks exactly like the image above. The simple press of a button starts measuring the heartbeat, the result being displayed almost instantly, and although Apple initially stated that we will see results from the sensor readings only in applications installed on the iPhone, here they are also available in the Apple Watch.

Notifications Center and glances

Glances will come pre-installed in the Apple Watch together with the one dedicated to monitoring heartbeats, those dedicated to battery status, but also those for fitness, clock, weather, music, Maps, calendar and quick access to settings. The Apple Watch will have, separately from these, a Notifications center that will be accessible through a swipe on the screen, where the notifications sent by each individual application will be visible. Developers will be able to choose which notifications appear on our Apple Watches and which notifications appear only on phones, so we won't see anything on the Apple Watch.

Storage space and music

Apple stated last year that the Apple Watch will be able to store music that we will be able to listen to even when we are not connected to an iPhone, 8 GB of storage space being offered to those who tested the prototypes of the watch. It is not yet known if the final models will have so much storage space, but even so we will be able to transfer music from the iPhone to the watch using the dedicated companion application, and the interesting part is that we will be able to stream music from the Apple Watch in accessories connected via Bluetooth.

Companion application for iPhone

Apple Watch application interface

A few weeks ago, I presented the companion application for the iPhone, this will offer an extremely diverse range of options for controlling the product, and you can learn more from the respective article.

Force Touch, digital crown and Voice Control

Force Touch

Apple Watch will contain a new technology called Force Touch, which will make the difference between long presses and quick, light ones, based on this interaction various functions will be controlled. The digital crown is used to zoom in/out at various times, but movements through various menus can also be controlled through it, including returning to the main application screen. Separately, the Apple Watch will also contain a writing module after dictation, which allows a rudimentary interface control, but it will not allow writing emails directly from the terminal, Siri being excluded.

Performance and Sport bracelet

The Apple Watch will have an S1 chip inside which the iPhone 4S hardware would be hidden, i.e. an 800 MHz dual-core processor with 512 MB RAM and maybe 8 GB RAM, those who tested the product claiming that it is very fast . The problem is that if we install more than 200 applications in Apple Watch, it responds very hard to commands in the main screen, so this will be a main limitation. The people who tested the Apple watch claim that it has the best interface designed for any smartwatch, displaying vibrant colors and an extremely well-made interface, the 38mm version being very small.

As for the sports bracelet, it seems that it would be difficult to close on the hand at first use and it needs some time to get used to it, but considering that it is the cheapest option, people will probably I get used to it very quickly.

Forced closing of applications and settings

Finally we reach the function of closing the watch, the communication button on the right side doing this as needed, the long press of it will completely close the watch. Apple Watch will display a confirmation message to make sure we don't close it accidentally, and after its approval the watch will be closed completely, the same button being used by a quick press to forcefully close applications that are stuck. Regarding the settings, Apple Watch has a dedicated menu with various toggles that allow us to control certain functions such as Airplane Mode, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and not only that.

On Monday at 19:30 the Apple Watch will be officially presented by the Apple company and then I'm waiting for you on iDevice.ro to discuss all the details related to it.

  1. I quote: "Apple Watch will contain a new technology called Force Touch, which will make the difference between long presses and quick, light ones, based on this interaction various functions will be controlled."
Forgive me, but this technology is not new at all. Maximum reinvented. I'm not saying it's copied because it sounds bad.

  2. @tutu: Apple knows how to make already invented technologies work perfectly, which unfortunately other companies can't do (eg Samsung)

  3. Iulius, do you have anything specific to complain about the Forche Touch technology implemented by Samsung? Or do you talk like that too... to be noticed?

  4. Super autonomy, probably because of the bluetooth connection and the autonomy of the iPhones will be extraordinary, from bad to worse.

  5. @Costin, Apple Watch has a motion sensor so that when you raise your hand or move it a little, it displays the main screen, i.e. the time.
