Apple is one of the largest IT companies on the globe, and in recent years it has annually registered a multitude of invention patents for mobile terminals, the year 2014 seems to be an extremely good one for those from Cupertino, they managed to place themselves on 8th position in the top 10 companies that register patents for such devices. On the first position in the top we find the company IBM, a close partner of those from Apple, they "steal" the place from those from Samsung, Qualcomm climbing to the third position, those from Microsoft, Google, Sony, LG, Blackberry and Ericsson completing the top places, Apple sneaking in between LG and the Canadians from Blackberry.
According to statistics regarding patents registered, a third of these were dedicated to mobile terminals, the percentage being on the rise every year from 2004 until now, a sign that this industry is extremely important and will continue to be in the future since people are so dependent on communication systems mobile communications. If in the US the focus is on mobile terminals, in Europe only 10% of patents were registered for this type of technology, so on the "old continent" the focus is probably on inventions that help humanity more.
