Universal buys MediaPro Music, could bring Apple Music to Romania

Madia Pro MusicUniversal Music Group bought MediaPro Music through the Universal Music Romania subsidiary in a transaction whose value was not disclosed, and now the record company that was part of the MediaPro trust is part of the Universal Music global family.

The purchase is an extremely important one for the Romanian market, and this is because access to Universal Music Group's music will be facilitated by the parent company, local artists will have a very strong brand behind them, especially from a financial point of view.

MediaPro Music occupies the third position in the list of the largest record companies in Romania, having under contract extremely well-known artists such as: Loredana, Holograf, Andra, Vunk, Ștefan Bănică, Sore, Alina Eremia, Cargo and many, many others.

Well, now what does this acquisition mean for us, those who want audio streaming services like abroad? Well, the purchase made today by Universal Music in Romania can facilitate the launch Apple Music, iTunes Radio and iTunes Match in our country much faster than we expected.

Moreover, services like Spotify can reach us much more easily, Universal being one of the main partners of the companies that offer audio streaming services globally for several hundred million users on various platforms.

We have repeatedly told you that the launch of Apple's audio streaming services could be blocked by Romanian legislation and local record companies, but the entry of such an important partner into the country could finally bring these services to us.

Of course, no one can confirm this without a doubt and no one can guarantee that these services will be available sooner than expected, but I strongly believe that they will be launched next year, in the worst case.

"We are excited about the acquisition of MPM and welcome the artists and employees of the new company to the Universal Music family. It is one of the most important stages in the development of our company since its establishment in 2006. Through the acquisition of one of the most significant players in the local market of the last 17 years, Universal Music Group proves its confidence in the local artistic potential. Some of the most representative Romanian artists will now be part of our portfolio and we are looking forward to working together. Universal Music Romania is dedicated to preserving and developing the MPM repertoire. We are confident that our shared expertise and representative local catalog will set new standards for the local music industry," he said Ioana Fesnic, Managing Director – Universal Music Romania.

"We are excited to become part of the largest record label in the world and confident that this will ensure the sustainable development of our artist portfolio. We embark on this new stage eager to join forces with Universal Music Romania", he said Dana Adam, General Manager – MediaPro Music.
