Orange claims that it has the fastest mobile internet in Romania and this statement is based on the statistics published by ANCOM, the National Authority for Communications Administration and Regulation, at the beginning of this month.
Those from ANCOM took over data about tests done on the Netograf.ro platform by some Romanians, centralized them and published a press release in which they provide information about fixed and mobile Internet browsing speeds in Romania.
According to them, Orange has the best mobile internet in Romania with download speeds of 34 Mbps in buildings and 52 Mbps outside them, they are followed by Vodafone Romania with speeds of 16 Mbps in buildings and 27 Mbps outside them, Telekom being placed in 3rd place and RCS & RDS in 4th place.
The statements are official, they come from a state authority, but how credible are they given the fact that in Romania there are too few companies that conduct complex studies on Internet browsing speeds, these studies having to have a large base of users.
You can find the answer to this question in this page of Netograf.ro, where the statistics regarding the mobile internet speeds obtained in Romania in user tests are public, based on details regarding the number of tests performed by users.
To see how useful the information from ANCOM is, I made a comparison regarding the mobile internet speeds of the main mobile operators in Romania, as they were obtained in tests, but also the number of tests done for each.
As you can see from the comparison, both in the case of those from Orange and in the case of Vodafone we are talking about a little over 1000 tests for each done in three months, while in the case of Telekom the figure was not reached of 300 tests.
Under these conditions, the data related to Telekom compared to Orange and Vodafone are invalid, and the same can be said about Digi Mobil, there barely reaching 400 tests performed in 3 months. Practically, in both situations, there are 3 and 2.5 times fewer tests than in the case of Orange or Vodafone, and a comparison in these conditions does not really make sense.
If we now move from the local statistics to those of Speedtest, things are different, not by much in the case of those from Orange, but by a lot for those from Vodafone or Telekom, where the speeds are almost double those recorded in Romania, Digi Mobil having equally poor results.
I don't know how many tests are done quarterly in Speedtest for Romania, but I have some certainty that we are talking about more than the almost 3000 tests carried out in Netograf.ro, so from here you can draw your own conclusions regarding mobile internet browsing speeds in Romania.
My conclusion is this: Orange has a very good 4G internet and this is one of the 2 reasons why I didn't leave them, but I think it should be based on much more complex studies based on a much larger number of users to declare that they have the fastest mobile internet in Romania.
