Here's how we should charge our smartphones, according to researchers

Yes, we know, our smartphone batteries barely last a day, but it's partly our fault, my fault because, according to researchers, we've been charging it wrong all this time.

Many of us have an ingrained notion that charging our smartphones in small bursts will cause long-term damage to their batteries and that it is better to charge them when they are close to death.

It seems to be wrong.

In fact, a site from the Cadex company called “ Battery University "details how and why the batteries in our smartphones are sensitive to "their own versions of stress". And, just like for humans, extended stress can damage the battery's long-term life.

If you want to keep your smartphone battery in good condition and without worries to work for the long term, you need to change a few things. I repeat, these conform Battery University.

Do not keep the phone plugged in when it is fully charged

According to the site I was telling you about, leaving the phone connected when it is fully charged, as you probably do overnight, can be a bad habit that can damage the battery in the long run.

Once the smartphone has reached 100%, it becomes trickle charges to keep it at 100%. Thus, the battery is kept under great stress, in a state of high voltage.

"When fully charged, remove the battery from its charging device. This is like relaxing the muscles after strenuous exercise. You too would be pretty miserable if you worked out nonstop for hours and hours. "

In fact, don't try to charge it to 100%

At least when you don't have to. According to "Battery University" the Li-ion battery does not need to be fully charged, nor is it desirable to do so. "In fact, it is better not to fully charge, because a high voltage stresses the battery"

Connect your phone whenever you can

It seems that the batteries in our smartphones are much more durable if we charge them occasionally throughout the day instead of plugging them in for a big charging session when they are empty.

Charging your phone's battery when it loses 10 percent of its battery would be the best-case scenario, according to the site. Obviously, it's not practical for most people, so connect your smartphone whenever you can. It is good to connect and disconnect it several times a day.

Not only does it keep your smartphone battery up and running optimally for longer, but it also keeps it charged throughout the day.

Keep your phones cool

We know that smartphone batteries are sensitive to heat and Apple suggests removing certain cases that heat up the iPhone when we charge it.

"If you notice that your device gets hot when you charge it, take it out of its case first. If you're out in the hot sun, keep your phone covered. It'll protect your battery's health. "

  1. Stress is the disease of the century. Could it be that we don't have a stressed phone battery? Since iPhone 4, I let it discharge completely, full charge (100%) and my battery lasted at least a day and a half. Now with SE I have 42 charging cycles, I proceed the same way as above and morning 6-7 hours of use and almost 60 hours since the last charge. So how could it be better❓

  2. Me too, all the iPhones I've had I kept them charged overnight and they had no problems, it's really stupid to think that a €500-600 phone can be overcharged... that's enough smart enough to stop charging when it reaches 100%. Topic closed from my point of view!
