Apple wants to buy McLaren

Apple is in advanced negotiations to buy McLaren, one of the most famous car manufacturers.

Apple is discussing a possible acquisition with McLaren Technology Group, the discussions seem to be quite advanced, according to sources inside the two companies, who were not named. McLaren Technology Group is a British company, whose headquarters are in Surrey, specializing in the development of automobiles, but also having divisions in other market sectors.

McLaren Technology Group was founded in 1981, shortly after its founder, Ron Dennis, bought the McLaren Formula 1 team. Since then, McLaren Technology Group has grown to become a globally recognized brand, mainly thanks to the automobiles it produces and participates in Formula 1 races.

Apple and representatives of McLaren have been discussing for several months about a transaction following which the American company will take over the British subsidiary group in its entirety. The goal is to have a company that is able to develop the electric and autonomous car that it alone cannot bring to the market in the following years, as it would like.

Apple would pay only 1.5 billion dollars for the McLaren company, so less than for Beats, and this is because the British have been recording losses for several years. At such an amount, McLaren would be a real bargain for the Apple company, which has more than 200 billion dollars in a monetary reserve collected in the last 10 years.

The McLaren P1 was announced a few months ago as the first electric car produced by the group for global consumers, so those from Apple could develop this project further. Of course, all McLaren engineers would be of great use to Apple, because its current team does not seem capable of completing the project for the development of a car.

The interest of those from Apple vis-à-vis this acquisition reveals the fact that its project regarding the development of an electric and autonomous car is not progressing as the management would like. In this idea, the acquisition of McLaren would provide Apple with experienced engineers and a solid base to be able to manufacture a car by 2020.

UPDATED: As is normal, the people from McLaren deny that they are in discussions with Apple regarding a possible investment in the company. What McLaren does not deny is the fact that a sale of the company would be discussed.

"We can confirm that McLaren is not in discussion with Apple in respect of any potential investment."
