Top Upgrade: what is the iPhone rental at Orange, how do you calculate it

How much does it cost to rent an iPhone at Orange through the Top Upgrade program and how do you calculate it depending on the type of subscription you have.

I told you today that you can rent an iPhone from Orange through Top Upgrade, the new program being announced just a few tens of minutes ago by the mobile phone operator. Basically, Orange offers subscribers the newest iPhone model for rent every year, so that they don't have to worry about purchasing the terminal.

Now, many of you are probably wondering how much it costs to rent an iPhone at Orange and how it is calculated for compatible subscriptions at the moment. Well, for starters you need to know that all models iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus are part of the Top Upgrade program, so you can rent them starting today, if you find them in stock.

For now, only 3 types of Orange Me subscriptions are compatible with the Top Upgrade program for iPhone rental, the costs reaching several tens of euros per month. Those from Orange list on their website the prices required for renting each iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus model based on the Top Upgrade program, they are consistent.

Top Upgrade: how much does it cost to rent an iPhone at Orange and how is it calculated

iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus rental at Orange through the Top Upgrade program is as follows:

  • iPhone 7 32 GB (38 euros/month) + Premium insurance of 10 euros/month;
  • iPhone 7 128 GB (43 euros/month) + Premium insurance of 10 euros/month;
  • iPhone 7 256 GB (48 euros/month) + Premium insurance of 10 euros/month;
  • iPhone 7 Plus 32 GB (43 euros/month) + Premium insurance of 10 euros/month;
  • iPhone 7 Plus 128 GB (48 euros/month) + Premium insurance of 10 euros/month;
  • iPhone 7 Plus 256 GB (53 euros/month) + Premium insurance of 10 euros/month;

Basically, for an iPhone 7 32 GB you pay 456 euros annually + 120 euros Premium insurance, so you arrive at a total cost of 576 euros for a terminal that you will not keep. iPhone 7 32 GB is sold by Orange at the moment at a standard price of approximately 780 euros, so we are talking about a very high price for what is offered.

Moreover, a new iPhone used for a year has a resale price of over 500 euros, so if you bought the new terminal, you would not lose as much money on resale.

It is true that you do not pay for the entire terminal at once, but the subscription recommended by Orange for Top Upgrade, Orange Me 11, brings a monthly cost of 59 euros for the iPhone 7. Of that cost, 11 euros is represented by the subscription, the remaining 48 euro being the rent for the iPhone 7 32 GB and the Premium insurance that the operator imposes.

In the case of an iPhone 7 Plus 32 GB, you end up paying 516 euros annually for rent + 120 euros for Premium insurance + 132 euros for the Orange Me 11 subscription, the total cost being 771 euros annually. Of course, from this, only the cost of 636 euros for the terminal matters, given that the device costs approximately 870 euros standard at Orange.

I would like to say that the Top Upgrade program for iPhone rental from Orange is a very good one, but the prices charged for the rental are very high. The idea itself is extremely good and I'm glad to see that ideas that are successful abroad are brought to Romania, see the iPhone installment sales program in the USA, but with lower prices, Top Upgrade could be a real success.
