The iPhone 8 may have an optical fingerprint reader

iPhone 8 could have a fingerprint reader produced by those from Synaptics, it could be integrated at any time by those from Cupertino.

iPhone 8 will be launched by the Apple company during 2017, and one of the biggest changes rumored so far has the terminal screen in the center. It is rumored that Apple intends to implement in the iPhone 8 an OLED screen that has no edges in any part and covers almost the entire front panel of the case.

This change would also require removing the Home button and placing Touch ID under the screen, and this is perfectly possible at the moment. Synaptics, an old Apple partner, announced today the launch of an optical fingerprint reader, capable of scanning fingerprints even under protective panels with a maximum thickness of 1 mm.

Natural ID FS9100 is a series of fingerprint readers that Synaptics will launch for its partners, and the iPhone 8 could have one integrated. Since 2015, Synaptics has been supplying chips with drivers for iPhone screens, thanks to the acquisition of Renesas SP, and in 2017 it could also offer Apple a new fingerprint reader.

The integration of this fingerprint reader in the iPhone 8 will bring us a much better experience to use our devices, but also more space to display information. Extending the diagonal of the screen would also involve the integration of some sensors under the screen, and those from Synpatics could help Apple with this change as well.

"Synaptics' FS9100 family of fingerprint sensors represent a new breed of optical fingerprint sensor technology that is designed to meet the needs of mobile devices, including the ability to image through thick 2.5D glass. In addition to opening the door to new industrial design options, it enables OEMs to provide highly durable, button-free cover glass and more easily provide water resistant products while eliminating low yield glass processing.”

Basically, Apple now has everything it needs to make a radical change to the design and functionality of the iPhone 8, so there are few reasons not to do it. Unfortunately, Apple could launch the iPhone 8 together with two models of the iPhone 7S on the market, so only some users will enjoy this new technology.
