Starting yesterday, we finally have the Wi-Fi calling service for iPhone available in Romania, and thanks to it we can benefit from a function offered by Apple since more than 2 years ago. Orange Romania is the only mobile phone operator in Romania that offers Wi-Fi call service for customers, but the others will probably do the same in the future.
Now that the Wi-Fi call service for iPhone has been launched, you are probably wondering what exactly you can do with this new function on your terminals. Well, the answer is quite simple, you can make phone calls and send SMS messages, or you can receive calls and messages, using a Wi-Fi internet connection when the GSM signal is weak in your location.
The Wi-Fi call function comes into play when the GSM signal is very weak, and with its help you can make phone calls and send SMS as if you were using the operator's network. It doesn't matter what phone number you call, or what terminal the interlocutor has, because he will receive the calls and SMS through the mobile phone network.
What can you do with Wi-Fi calling on iPhone?
The Wi-Fi call service is linked to the mobile phone network, so any phone calls made or SMS sent will be deducted from your monthly subscription quota. More precisely, the minutes in the network, or national, spoken through the Wi-Fi call function will be deducted from what you have in your subscription, so the function will not allow you to speak for free.
If you no longer have minutes or SMS in the offer, they will be charged to your subscription, or deducted from the credit on the card, as if you would use them normally in the telephone network. The Wi-Fi call function also does not work while roaming, so you will not be able to use it, for now, when you are abroad.
Having said that, the Wi-Fi call service has the role of taking over the functionality of the GSM network when the signal is not strong enough and nothing more. The Wi-Fi call function produces its effects only on your terminal and it does not matter what number you call, the called terminal does not need the Wi-Fi call service to receive the call.
It's quite sad that other companies in the US already had this function 1-2 years ago. Is it good that we are also moving towards the good?
It's fixed "rubbing on a wooden leg"... if I connect the phone to wifi, I'll still call or send sms to someone... bearing in mind that 90% of the population use a social network...
it's great if the difference is only 1-2 years honestly
WhatsApp…Viber…
I don't know where you could use this function, that is, to have wifi and no GSM signal? Only in the mountains can you say that you don't have a GSM signal, and where the hell is the wifi there? This would have been good for those with mobile Gigi if they implemented it. I for one don't see the point of it, so it's good that you have it, but it's not something I can't live without.
And what does weak signal mean, i.e. show me no service or have a dot or two?
Marius, tell me when you will be able to talk to "grandmother" (she has a Nokia 3310) using WhatsApp or Viber. That's what this facility is for!
The Apple page for checking iCloud Activation Lock no longer works.... Also, no such site is valid anymore. Do you know anything about this zaone? Do you think it's something temporary? It didn't work last night either
We are glad that Orange (Romania) is finally thinking about our "grandparents"!
Personally, mine are already in the grave!
And yes! If there are still "grandparents" using old terminals (such as Nokia 3310) that we would like to talk to, well, you better "bother" and go to them to talk!
Or search through their pockets to take a PHONE from them! (I'M TALKING ABOUT OUR DAYS!) That's all!
Otherwise, MARKETING POLICY!
NB I really don't know how and how much this SERVICE would really benefit those who use mobile telephony (in Romania) TODAY! And I say this with APPRECIATION for those who have already proposed (much better!) alternatives that I can't remember here!
I wish you a good day!
Does it also work on other iOS or only the latest one?
You're in a basement club that's on fire and you quickly call 112 🙂
Only I can't think of updating the carrier?...ios 10.0.1...do I need to update or what's the matter?
It's a very good function, for example: let's say you're in the country, somewhere in the house you don't have signal, but you have cable internet and wifi in the house and the phone is connected to wifi, call a number from the phonebook and you can vb!
If you stay where there is no good coverage, but you have wifi, it is very useful...
Well done orange, and you offered a "free" service?
It seems useless to me, where do I not have a good signal? In the field. Do I have wi-fi in the field? NOT. I don't think that there is no signal in the towns in Romania, at least 2G. Anyway, I don't have orange, so not interesting!
It is useful for those who have a weak signal at home. I can't believe that the population is so scared...
You all leave comments with stupid ideas related to the field and stuff but don't think about the real usefulness
The Tembali are the ones who live at your home address and I didn't offend anyone. I expressed my opinion like a march in the snow.
By this, Orange admits that it does not have a good signal everywhere?
I live in a block of flats, I have an iPhone, hot water, tiles, parquet, double glazing, but what don't I have? Guess? Signal from orange... I always have to go out the window with half of my body to be able to talk to someone and make myself understood. So here I see its usefulness...
Lol, I think this is the worst conclusion I've read so far :)))))))))))
90% of the population use whatsapp and viber? The joke is good, but still, do you have any documentation behind it?
It is very useful inside massive buildings where the 4g signal is weak
In Bucharest there are ffff many areas where you have no signal in your apartment. Until last year, I had no signal, it was totally 0. But in this situation it is much better because most of them have wifi at home. And by the way, for all the imbeciles who comment stupidly! It's a new service, really OK from the Orange team. Maybe you get a call and you're at home and you don't have a signal?! Not? It's not a thing Ok? Comment fixed due to lack of activity. Congratulations orange.
Yes, like at Colectiv, they called the first time and only then rushed to go out. The first time you save your life because you can't rely on the survival instinct and only then call 112, you can call the second time when you surfaced.
To talk on the phone you don't need 4G, before on 2G how did you talk from a 3310?
I don't have 2g on 6s
I have ios 6 and Vodafone on the 10.2.1S plus. I have it in Settings-Mobile Data Options-voice&data-4G,3G,2G.
Alexandru dear, peasant. I live in the center of Cluj. Do you know anything related to the structures of houses? Earthquake structures, things like that? You are from the cow's tail, sir. In such premises the signal is weaker.
Until now, how did you talk if you were called at home and you had no signal??? Or did you subscribe to Orange and when you got home you found with amazement and amazement that you have no signal? And for all imbeciles like you, we talk about the usefulness of this service and where we can use it. I wonder what percentage of Orange customers will use it, I don't think more than 1%, so far 0% have used it (because it didn't exist). I'm not saying that it's not good that they introduced it, just that the overwhelming majority will never use it.
Well, don't they boast that they have the best signal, the best coverage, HD Voice and the like?
Not on Orange
There are buildings where no operator has great coverage. If you work in the basement of a building, or go to an underground club/restaurant, no one will cover you.
If I go to Germany and activate vpn from the phone with vpn server selection from Romania, will the wifi call work?
I have a feeling that many people will be dumbfounded!!! 🙂
Good evening! Do I understand that if I'm in Spain, for example, and I call Romania with a Wi-Fi call (from a Romanian Orange SIM), I only use the minutes included in my subscription, without additional cost? Pixy.
I recommend you read the part about roaming again.
Theoretically not, because you are roaming there. Basically, you can try.
Ms24ccc you can try the figure with the vpn but the chances are small. Disable the localization as well!
It also works with 0 signal, it doesn't necessarily have to be weak.
It also works with Airplane Mode active, the idea of weak signal is for the world to understand which is the great utility.
But if you put it on airplane mode and with VPN from Romania, I say it works.
And what exactly does weak signal mean, a dot out of 5? This is a kind of wifi assist, even there I don't know exactly what the low speed means.
I called my mother from the salt mine in Turda, where there is no GSM signal. If I stayed with the Galaxy S2... bye bye mom. And if I had a dead battery...? That's how I have Maximum Savings and Wi-Fi calling on the Samsung Galaxy S6.
Does anyone have any idea why it doesn't stay on Orange Wi-Fi all the time? If I have it active, shouldn't it always appear in the upper left corner, as long as I have a wireless signal?
The bottom line is that most people with a compatible smartphone will use it (at home, at the office or wherever they have wifi). And you know why? Because usually the person at home is on wifi and automatically the call will be on wifi. It won't be long until it will be automatically active on the terminals.
It's good because I have someone in the mountains where there is no GSM signal. Instead, it has internet and wifi signal. So now I can use the phone for calls
On iOS 10.3 beta 1 it doesn't work
When I go to the country, I have wifi internet at home, but I have no Orange signal at all. The ef function is useful. I had to leave the house to catch an Edge line so I could call.
The Ghencea extension has areas where you have no signal from any operator, outside or at home. The solution was to install a signal amplifier in the house of one of the neighbors. Orange took care of that right. Anyway, a neighborhood of villas in Bucharest without a GSM signal is a total embarrassment.
It says "orange wi-fi" on the signal in the top left, so you know when it's active, regarding those who ask about signal dots.
It works very well, thank you orange.
For me it stays on Orange Wi-Fi whenever I'm connected to a wi-fi. At home, in the city center, I have a very good GSM signal and it still rings on Wi-Fi. So, not when there is a weak GSM signal, but whenever you are connected to Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi calling is active. It certainly consumes even less battery, because it no longer needs the GSM antenna when you are at home or wherever you are on Wi-Fi.
It's important to note that whenever you're on stable Wi-Fi, the phone switches to Orange Wi-Fi. So, it doesn't matter how the GSM signal is, if the phone connects to a Wi-Fi network (with bandwidth corresponding to the required parameters and with Internet access), it automatically switches to Orange Wi-Fi.
That's what I was told in customer relations, and it applies to me 100%.
I have full 4G signal and when I connect to wi-fi it switches to Orange Wi-Fi. This also reduces the consumption of the phone in standby and not only that. Whenever it is on stable wi-fi, GSM communications are rerouted to wi-fi and the GSM antenna is no longer used.
So it's a welcome feature and much more useful than one might think!
It's not always like that, I have an iPhone 6S and although the Wi-Fi speed is very good, Orange Wi-Fi is not always active.
Me too. I have Fiberlink 1.000. At the same time, I have a signal of 4-5 dots in the house. And it stays on Orange Wi-Fi all the time. I don't know what the reality is, I'm not contradicting you, I also specified that this is my experience and that it completely verifies what I was told in customer relations.
You could even write an article asking readers about their experience with this service.
One more thing, I just tested it, Orange Wi-Fi works even if I have the phone set to 4G Off, that is, to 3G.
It also works with airplane mode active.
