The first smartphone with 4 cameras was created

If smartphones with dual cameras are not impressive enough for you, then now we can talk about a smartphone with 4 cameras. The Fraunhofer Institute is the one that developed this smartphone with 4 cameras and we are talking about a prototype for now, but it is extremely interesting and most likely unique.

More precisely, we are talking about four image sensors mounted in a drawer that can be inserted and removed from the smartphone case just like a SIM drawer. Given the way the sensors are positioned, a set of mirrors is used to allow the recording of images from various angles, as a normal camera would not be able to do.

This smartphone prototype can record images at a resolution of 20 megapixels, auto-focusing and optical image stabilization are also available. The even more interesting part is that this system does not require the camera to be removed from the case, as is now the case with many premium smartphones on the market.

Unfortunately, the whole system is also very complicated to implement in a smartphone, and the 4 image sensors consume, most likely, a lot of energy. Although it is unlikely that we will see something like this in a smartphone soon, the idea itself is interesting and shows us that in the future we could see much more complex cameras for smartphones.
