iOS 11 – one of the Best Changes

iOS 11 comes with many changes prepared by the Apple company, and one of them is related to all the video clips recorded by us using iPhone terminals or iPad tablets. Apple announced in June that it will implement support for HEVC technology, High Efficiency Video Coding, in iOS 11, allowing a substantial reduction in the size of video clips made on smartphones and tablets.

iOS 11 with HEVC, or H.265, can reduce the size of video clips by up to 50% without substantially affecting the quality of the recorded ones. Basically, Apple wants to reduce the size of video clips made by us in order to have more space in iDevices, and HEVC is a very good solution for iOS 11, although we are talking about a new technology with limited support for now.

iOS 11 – one of the biggest changes

iOS 11 good changes

iOS 11 has support for the technology, but the rest of Apple's operating systems, apart from macOS High Sierra, have not yet implemented it. In the same vein, Windows computers also do not support HEVC, or H.265, available starting with iOS 11, so you need to know what to expect if you decide to use this technology to record video clips.

iOS 11 will use more processing power to edit these video clips, the time needed to edit them being up to 5 times longer than in the case of H.264. Practically, the new video format for iOS 11 comes with great benefits, but also with some compromises, and everyone who intends to use this new technology on their own iDevices/Macs should know this.

"HEVC introduces the notion of CTUs or coding tree units. And these it starts down at 4 x 4 and go all the way up to 64 x 64. And it's when you can use these larger sizes is when you realize the greater compression benefit. And this is especially true when you're dealing with high resolution videos and images."
