Does the Phone Signal Increase if You Raise Your Hand to the Sky?

How much can the mobile phone signal increase if you raise your hand to the sky when you can't make calls or surf the Internet?

When the phone signal is weak, many people quickly think that simply raising your hand to the sky is an easy solution to increase the signal strength and be able to make calls or stay on the Internet. This is a preconception that many rely on when they have a bad GSM signal on their phone, but it is based on a wrong foundation.

A university professor explains to us that raising our hand to the sky when we have a bad signal will not have any effect to solve our problems, and this is because of the way in which the networks are thought. The distance between the phone and the ground does not affect the GSM signal, but the location where we are has a much greater impact on the signal strength.

In this idea, the teacher recommends changing the location in which we are to look for an area with a better signal, especially if we are in a crowded urban area. If we are in a building, the recommendation is the same, because changing the location can bring us to an area where the signal has a higher strength than the one where we are.

This recommendation is not useful for situations where we are at concerts, matches, or other areas with extremely many people, then leaving the respective location being the solution. Having said that, if you have a weak GSM signal on your phone, try to walk a little instead of raising your hand to the sky, because the effect will be null.
