Digi Mobil: Progress for the 5G Network, when the 4G is barely breathing

Digi Mobil announced today that it is making serious progress for the launch of the 5G network together with Ericsson, the mobile operator making important announcements.

Digi Mobil announced today the progress made for the launch 5G network in Romania, the mobile phone operator working with Ericsson to launch its high-speed network in our country. Digi Mobil and Ericsson have successfully conducted tests for a 5G network that can reach speeds of up to 10 Gbps in Romania, a prototype platform being built by the two companies to make such an achievement possible.

Digi Mobil is also going to reduce the latency of the signal by up to 10 times compared to what the 4G networks offer at the moment, this being the great advantage that the new 5G networks have over the current ones. Thanks to 5G technology, Digi Mobil says that more customers will be able to benefit from a better internet browsing speed even in congested areas, this being the weak point of the current network of the mobile operator.

Digi Mobil: Progress for the 5G Network, when the 4G is barely breathing

Digi Mobil says that the company's network equipment is already good enough to support a high-speed 5G network, so the transition from the current 4G to the new one should not be very difficult. Basically, 5G networks are thought to offer the lowest possible latency for a wireless network, something that is now possible with fiber optic networks, only that everything will be available without connecting any cable to any phone.

Digi Mobil is taking steps towards the implementation of 5G networks in Romania because Orange, Vodafone and Telekom have already been developing them for some time and have made serious progress to officially launch them. The problem of those from Digi Mobil is that a 5G network must also have sufficiently good coverage, otherwise it will be a semi-failure, as is the 4G one, which is available in some cities, but less so outside them, and it is not useful for too many customers.

"Digi Mobil and Ericsson present capabilities of 5G technology, predicting applications that will ensure the bridge between 4G and 5G

Digi Mobil and Ericsson presented, during the "INTELLIGENT STEP TO 5G" event on May 3, 2018, relevant performances of 5G technology, predicting the evolution from 4G to 5G of the network used by Digi Mobil.

In the near future, life as we know it will change substantially with the development of technology, which will connect everything that surrounds us. With the help of 5G networks, connections will be faster, things that play a role in everyday comfort will be connected, with benefits still little understood or known by each of us.

For telecommunications network operators, the fiber optic network and fixed-mobile integration work together to pave the way to 5G and beyond, respectively to keep up with the speeds necessary to transport huge amounts of data, with minimal delay (on the order of milliseconds ) and with a massive number of connected elements. RCS & RDS, through the fiber optic network developed for maximum coverage, differentiates itself on the way to new technologies following significant continuous investments in recent years. The permanent concern to build an optical fiber network, to offer the best quality available to consumers, defines the convergent path with future 5G services.

Today's event also opens a dialogue between RCS & RDS and the representatives of various industries to find common solutions, which can make business more efficient and bring a competitive advantage in the period to come. We want to present the capabilities of the services and networks that we own, but also their future potential, so that our partners know that they can rely on us in the development of their businesses.

Thus, during the conference we directly demonstrated the performance of 5G technology and practical solutions for different industries:

  • We tested the speed of 5G of up to 10 Gbps, through a prototype platform, as well as the signal latency, reduced to one tenth compared to the usual one for current 4G technology. Thus, we can estimate that, through 5G technology, users will experience access to high-speed mobile internet even in crowded areas such as concerts and festivals or sports events, without being affected by speed limitations, interference or signal instability. Downloading movies at 4K resolution will be a matter of seconds, while live TV broadcasts and sports events will become true immersive, virtual visual experiences, even for those who will not participate in person, in real life.
  • Internet of Eyes - We experienced the way in which future dynamic traffic monitoring applications can detect objects and determine their position in real time, with multiple applicability for smart city solutions, traffic management or public safety. 5G will be the backbone for the IoT, connecting the objects around us in ways we never thought possible. Users will experience independent vehicles that interact with traffic lights, which will mean a real revolution in traffic. Vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications will increase road safety and make public transportation more efficient. Sensors integrated in roads, railways and airstrips will communicate with each other and with intelligent vehicles, to improve the control of infrastructure and critical services.
  • Internet of Skills - We showed the potential of robotics in the cloud, i.e. how a robot can be controlled remotely, in a demonstration of a medical operation, in combination with virtual reality, to create the tactile internet, i.e. the remote and real-time transmission of the sensation of touch .
  • Immersive Gaming - augmented reality for movies and games that will allow a total virtual visual immersion, at 360 degrees.

"Today we took a first step together towards connecting to 5G technology. The Digi Mobil network is prepared for the evolution towards 5G, and this will allow Digi Mobil users, companies, state institutions, but also residential users, to connect to the objects that surround us, in what IoT and the interconnected society will mean, regardless of the distances that separate us, on an unprecedented scale, changing the way we interpret and shape the world. The new equipment in our network is already at the level of future 5G technology, allowing us in the future to offer Digi Mobil users an improved experience, with 5G functionalities: increased access speed, reduced latency, IoT. Last but not least, the unlimited internet offer for Digi Mobil's subscription customers is essential for the development of the economy and the digital world in Romania, Digi being the pioneer and permanent supporter of this trend." - said Valentin Popoviciu, Vice President of RCS & RDS.

"By 2023, 20% of the world's population will have 5G coverage. It will have a huge impact in terms of user experience and the digital transformation of industries and cities. Ericsson has already signed 40 agreements to start 5G studies worldwide. With this demonstration, we look to the future and what 5G will allow. It is also a step forward in the Romanian journey towards 5G" - declared Dragos - Mircea Rebegea, Ericsson Country Manager Romania."
