Huawei today made two extremely important announcements regarding the Mate 20 series, the Chinese company being present at IFA Berlin 2018 to announce new products, but also to talk about the future. The first important announcement is the launch of the new Kirin 980 chip, which Huawei presents as the first product using a 7nm manufacturing process, it will be integrated for the first time in the Huawei Mate 20 series, which will be launched in... October.
The Kirin 980 attacks the A12 with good performance, high autonomy and artificial intelligence
Huawei claims that the new Kirin 980 chip has integrated an octa-core processor consisting of ARM Cortex-A76 and Cortex-A55 processors, a Mali G76 video card, and a modem that offers speeds of up to 1.4 Gbps. Those from Huawei also claim that this new Kirin 980 chip supports faster RAM memory than the one integrated in its previous phones, and here we are talking about support for LPDDR4X RAM at frequencies up to 2133 MHz.
Huawei has the new Kirin 980 chip manufactured by TMSC, which also produces Apple's new A12 chip, and therefore both are produced using a 7nm manufacturing process, the most advanced at the moment. Two of the Cortex A-76 cores are clocked at 2.6 GHz and two at 1.92 GHz, while all 4 Cortex A-55 cores are clocked at 1.8 GHz, these being designed for simple tasks such as listening to music in the background, updates in the background, and anything that needs less power.
Huawei also claims that the new Kirin 980 chip offers energy efficiency up to 40% better than that of the Kirin 970 chip, while performance should be 20% higher, just behind the A11 chip of Apple. Huawei has integrated in this chip the Kirin 980 and two chips for artificial intelligence, this set-up being 2 times faster than what Apple offers in the A11 chip, but the new A12 chip is a completely different story.
Huawei Mate 20 will be released on October 16
Huawei announced today that the Mate 20 series will be launched on October 16 at a separate event in London, and this new Kirin 980 chip will be integrated into all three phones. So far it has been found out that the Huawei Mate 20 series will also include screens with diagonals between 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches, that the batteries will reach up to 4400 mAh, and that there might be a fingerprint reader in the screen of the Pro version, if customers are lucky.
Huawei did not provide details on the Mate 20 series beyond the new face and release date, but the important details will certainly be known by October 16, the presentation being organized a week after Google's. Huawei announced today the first smartphone chip produced with a 7nm manufacturing process, but Apple will put on sale the first phone with such a chip, the iPhone XS and iPhone 8S, arriving in stores at least a month before the Mate 20 series.
