E-ALERT, the warning system in case of major emergency in Romania, attracted numerous criticisms on Sunday morning because no alert was sent before and after a earthquake with the magnitude of 5.8 degrees on the Richter scale took place. RO-ALERT has announced from the very beginning that it will not send alerts before an earthquake occurs, but will send alerts after their occurrence, if there is significant material damage or loss of human life, and there is a danger of aftershocks .
RO-ALERT was perceived by everyone as a warning system in case of any emergency, but in reality it only refers to those that can be predicted, such as strong wind, extreme heat/cold, and others also. Today the Secretary of State from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Raed Arafat, also explained the real reason why RO-ALERT does not send earthquake alerts in Romania, the explanation being as logical as possible, in the end.

RO-ALERT will not send warnings before an earthquake occurs, according to Raed Arafat, because the population is not educated to react correctly when they receive such alerts. Some people may react in a completely unexpected way if RO-ALERT sends them an earthquake warning and may end up being killed while running for their lives, because this is the instinct of many when such an alert is issued.

RO-ALERT has a fairly solid logic behind it regarding the reason why earthquake warnings are not sent, and I think everyone can agree that shootings can happen at such times. On the other hand, the precious seconds that a warning can give you could help you save your life, but for now those who control RO-ALERT put more emphasis on the danger than on the potential to save lives, in case of earthquake.
