AirPods 2 are expected because they should bring at least a case that has a special LED that announces when they are sufficiently well charged or not. Apart from this change, no other important changes are expected, and this is because Apple would prepare them for another improved version of the Cupertino's wireless headphones.
AirPods 2 would bring a minor improvement to Apple's headphones, nothing extravagant, but even so, we are talking about something that a lot of people would like to buy. If AirPods 2 were really going to be released this year, then it is very possible that they will be available somewhere around Christmas, but not earlier than that, for now.
