VISA has issued an alert for a completely new method by which hackers can steal customer card data to clone them and steal money from them.

VISA recently published a new alert for cardholders describing a new method to clone cards much more easily even without users using them at an ATM to withdraw money. This time we are talking about a different method than the usual ones, the people from VISA discovered that in the USA hackers broke into the POS payment systems of some gas stations in order to steal the data of the cards used by customers, in order to later clone them , or to use them for other purposes.

VISA discovered that hackers used phishing or other attacks to gain access to the computer systems of those who provide POS payment systems for gas stations. Thanks to a separate software, the hackers were then able to take information about the cards used for transactions by customers, all without them knowing what was happening, and from there they could use the cards to do whatever they wanted.

VISA claims that cards that do not have a face and PIN are affected, their transaction authentication information being transmitted unencrypted by the POS through the payment processor's network. Hackers intercept the information and manage to obtain the card data, and this is quite simple because the POS do not have firewall protection, and are not separated from each other, as would be normal for equipment of this kind.

VISA explains in this document the method by which hackers exploit the payment systems of gas stations, and of course if the method was successfully used in the USA, it can be used just as easily in other areas of the world. It is good for all those who use cards to know that the theft of their data is done not only with special devices mounted on ATMs, but also through the network of the company that processes the payments made at the payment terminals.
