CAREFUL! Road fines have INCREASED EXTREMELY since January 1

ROAD FINES INCREASED

Traffic fines have increased extremely much since January 1st, and this can put you in the situation of having to pay extremely large sums for violating Romanian traffic laws, if the Romanian Police notices you.

For example, if until now the fine for holding a mobile phone while driving started at 860 LEI, from January 1st the same fine has a minimum value of 1300 LEI, and goes up to 2000 LEI, if you are caught.

We are talking about incredibly large amounts for a country like Romania, and of course they shouldn't be that big, although in 15 days they can be paid at half the value, but even so, it has reached some ridiculous amounts now .

The reason behind this 50% increase in the value of the fine point is based on the fact that the Romanian Government has not extended a legislative provision according to which the fine point must be indexed every year in step with the minimum gross salary.

The gross minimum wage increased to 2230 LEI starting January 1, and as the Romanian Government linked that extension to the budget law for 2020, a law challenged in the Constitutional Court of Romania by the PSD, we now have higher fines.

Practically, PNL and PSD acted against each other, and thus the parties leave us even with higher traffic fines from January 1st, which of course is not to anyone's liking, so you have to be very careful.

It is not known when the Constitutional Court will make a decision regarding the challenge submitted by the PSD to the budget law, but the Romanian Government can at any time issue an emergency order to return the fine point to the old value.
