Telekom: Decision with a Big DISADVANTAGE on the Romanian Market

Telekom made a very important decision because of which some of the customers lose the possibility of having access to a very important service in the future.

Telekom unpredictability

Telekom is the only large telecommunications operator in Romania that decided not to offer customers from all over the country something that the rest do, and this is not exactly very good news for many. Telekom has decided not to invest yet in a 5G infrastructure that will be available to customers in Romania, and this despite the fact that Orange, Vodafone and DIGI Mobil have 5G networks, the last one having the most extensive, for now, of all, this even though it kind of stopped the investments.

Telekom however, he decided to wait for the authorities to hold the auction for 5G frequencies before investing in an infrastructure, and the situation here is completely different from the one in Germany. Deutsche Telekom, the group that owns the Telekom subsidiary in Romania, has invested so much in the 5G network in Germany that it currently covers 16 million people with its infrastructure, i.e. somewhere around 17% of the country's total population.

Telekom: This is what many customers from all over Romania are now LOSING

Telekom decided not to follow a similar strategy in Romania, motivating his wait by the fact that he wants to see final decisions from the authorities, on which he can base his investments in 5G. Considering that they were left waiting, and were delayed by a year, the 5G auction in Romania had to be done in the fall of 2019, Telekom has now remained the only large telecommunications group without any 5G infrastructure, although in other European countries things are different.

Telekom at one point it was at the forefront of companies with important innovations, but when it comes to 5G, it is firmly at the tail, which is surprising for a European group focused on future technologies. There are definitely Telekom customers who would like to try 5G technology in Romania, other operators have at least 3/4 of the cities in which they offer coverage, even in quite large areas, but maybe this will change for those who remain follow.

Telekom is now following a different strategy, that of attracting as many new customers as possible to its services, either through porting or as completely new customers, and this brings better prices from competing operators as well.
