DSU clarifications about the existence of the new strain of Coronavirus Romania

DSU, the Department for Emergency Situations, published today a series of information regarding the uncertainties related to the existence of the new strain of the Coronavirus in Romania, the authorities saying that this has not yet been confirmed in the country.

"Following the information that appeared in the public space according to which in Romania the new strain of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus was identified in a patient recently returned to the country, hospitalized at the Matei Balș Institute in the Capital, for the correct information of public opinion, we specify next:

Following a careful monitoring of the epidemiological situation in Romania and in the context of the emergence of a new strain of the SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus confirmed by specialists as having a higher contagion rate among the population, we specify the fact that until this moment, on the territory of Romania no case of a person being infected with this new strain has been confirmed.

Given the information according to which at the Matei Balș Institute in Bucharest, a patient recently returned to the country was infected with this new strain, as a refutation of what was circulated in the print media, the representatives of the Institute had the right to reply, specifying the fact that in this at the moment there are no conclusive data to certify the presence of the new strain in a hospitalized patient.

At the same time, it was specified that two samples collected from a patient are being analyzed in the genetics laboratory of the Institute, which will confirm or deny the presence of this new strain in a few days.

Considering the maintenance of the epidemiological context and the need to limit the spread of the new Coronavirus, we continue to call for compliance with all sanitary protection measures in order to protect the health of communities."
