DIGI Mobil: What Stopped and the Impact for Romanian Customers

DIGI Mobil decided some time ago to stop something that is very beneficial for customers all over Romania, here is the impact the decision has for us.

DIGI Mobile off

DIGI Mobile is the third largest telecommunications operator this year, narrowly surpassing Telekom, an impressive achievement from many points of view. DIGI Mobil had a very active year 2020, despite the Coronavirus pandemic, the telecommunications operator managing to increase its coverage in our country to over 98%, fulfilling the obligations it assumed when it took over the 3G and 4G licenses.

DIGI Mobile however, another important day is approaching, more precisely the one year anniversary since it made the last update for the situation of its 5G network in Romania. In the last year, the people from DIGI Mobil have not updated the map with 5G coverage for Romania, a sign that they have not invested in its expansion, which is not hard to believe since the auction for 5G frequencies has not yet taken place in the country ours, a serious problem.

DIGI Mobil: What Stopped and the Impact for Romanian Customers

DIGI Mobile suddenly stopped investments in its 5G network, and at the beginning of this year, information appeared regarding a dispute that the operator would have with ANCOM due to some frequencies it licensed. Some speculate that the resumption of investments in the 5G infrastructure of DIGI Mobil, but also the auction for the 5G frequencies in Romania, would be affected by this problem, for which no solution has been found so far, and it is not known when it will be found.

DIGI Mobile could base the decision to suspend investments also on the fact that the situation of Huawei's 5G telecommunications equipment is not yet known. It is not known whether they will be allowed in Romania or not, in other European countries they are totally or partially prohibited, and as DIGI Mobil has already used Chinese equipment, it probably did not want to use them again, and then be forced to change them in various areas.

DIGI Mobile will definitely resume investments in 5G infrastructure from the moment the auction for frequencies takes place, probably even if the Huawei situation will not be finalized, regardless of when this will happen. Stopping these investments has a big impact on customers because the new 5G infrastructure would have solved the problem of low internet speeds.
