Huawei is hunted by the USA all over the world, the Americans trying to convince their strategic partners from as many areas of the globe as possible to treat the Chinese company as a danger to national security. Romania signed, through President Klaus Iohannis, a memorandum in 2019, by which it indirectly agreed to ban Huawei's access to 5G networks in our country, which of course has not happened yet, and the method of application is not yet known, or when this will happen.
Huawei sells telecommunications equipment and telephones in Romania at the moment without any restrictions, and this is because the USA could not obtain more from us than a document. Huawei lobbied for Romania not to ban 5G equipment in its networks, last fall a massive online campaign was carried out to present the company in a good light, but how successful it will be in achieving the real goal is difficult to say.
Huawei: The situation in Romania and the expected Important Decision
Huawei could have 5G equipment blocked at least in the important parts of the 5G networks in Romania, as happened in other countries in Europe, they being allowed there mainly in sparsely populated areas. Something similar could happen in Romania, a balanced solution that would not totally block the use of Huawei telecommunications equipment in 5G networks, but would also reduce the risk that important information could be stolen by the Chinese.
Huawei the sale of telephones will not be blocked in Romania, as happened in the USA, this being extremely far from a possible implementation in our country. Huawei's only problem at the local level is with telecommunications equipment, and if the restriction for 5G would also apply to 3G or 4G networks, then things would become even more complicated, and telecommunications operators would have to make major changes in the infrastructure .
Huawei has been waiting for some time for a decision regarding its 5G equipment to be taken by the Romanian authorities, but no one knows when it might come, the priority now being the Coronavirus pandemic.
