Romanian Government: Vaccination with AstraZeneca will continue in Romania

Romanian Government AstraZeneca vaccination continues in Romania

The Romanian government announced last night, following a CNCAV meeting, that vaccination with the AstraZeneca vaccine will continue in Romania, although some countries in the European Union have decided to completely suspend immunization with this type of serum.

The Romanian government is not waiting for a new decision from the European Medicines Agency to see if it is necessary, or not, to continue vaccination with this serum from AstraZeneca, but continues with the immunization, but if another decision will be made at the European level, she will be respected.

"During this evening, an extraordinary meeting was held in which the representatives of the National Committee for the Coordination of Activities on Vaccination against COVID-19 (CNCAV), the Ministry of Health, the National Institute of Public Health and the National Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices from Romania (ANMDMR) for the analysis of the events recorded at European level related to the vaccine produced by the company AstraZeneca, following the reporting of cases of coagulation disorders in people immunized with this type of vaccine.

Following the analysis of the adverse reaction reports registered in Romania, the reasons for the decisions of the other countries, the events reported at the international level, but also the recommendations of the European regulatory authority, the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the representatives from the above institutions mentioned decided to continue the vaccination campaign in Romania with all vaccines against COVID-19, currently authorized at European level.

Until the evaluation of reported cases of blood coagulation disorders by the Pharmacovigilance Committee of the European Medicines Agency (EMA), PRAC (Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee) is completed and a recommendation is issued at the extraordinary meeting that will take place on Thursday, March 18 , the EMA recommends continuing vaccination, emphasizing that the benefits of vaccination in preventing severe forms of COVID-19 and death outweigh the risk of adverse reactions.

Cases of coagulation disorders have occurred in a small number of vaccinated patients, without exceeding the frequency reported in the general unvaccinated population. It should be borne in mind that these disorders have different causes and can occur independently of the administration of the vaccine. Currently, experts at the European level are analyzing with maximum rigor all the available data to establish whether there is a causal relationship between the administration of the vaccine and these events.

Vaccination remains the safe and effective solution for defeating the COVID-19 pandemic, and the vaccines used in Romania are authorized by the European Medicines Agency (EMA), the most rigorous decision-making body, which brings together experts at the European level. We recommend reporting any suspected side effects by both professionals and patients.

CNCAV ensures the population of complete transparency and full responsibility in the prompt communication of all information of interest, so that the vaccination process is carried out in a favorable and safe environment for all people who want to be immunized against COVID-19."
