"Variants of SARS CoV 2 that cause concern!

Confirmed cases with the Omicron variant

In week 48 (29/11/2021-05/12/2021) the first 2 cases with the Omicron variant were confirmed:

1. 48-year-old woman, from Brașov county, confirmed on 04/12/2021, having travel history to South Africa and complete primary vaccination, with 2 doses;

2. 59-year-old man, from Vaslui county, confirmed on 04/12/2021, having travel history to South Africa and complete primary vaccination, with 1 dose.

Both people, isolated at home, are asymptomatic.

Until December 5, 2021, 7.524 sequencings were reported to INSP-CNSCBT, of which 163 in week 48 (29/11/2021-05/12/2021).
The 163 sequencings from week 48 were reported by INCDMM Cantacuzino (92) and INBI "Prof. Dr. Matei Balș" (71).

*From week 36, the Alpha variant no longer represents VOC.

The reasons why ECDC took this decision are the drastic reduction in the circulation of this variant in the EU/EEA after the emergence of the Delta variant, as well as the fact that there is little evidence of the impact of the Alpha variant on vaccine-induced immunity.

**A variant of SARS-CoV-2 belonging to the Pango B.1.1.529 lineage, with a large number of S gene mutations compared to the original virus, was detected in early November 2021.

On November 26, 2021, the variant was designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a variant of concern (VOC) and received the name "Omicron".

Until December 5, 2021, the confirmation rate with VOC was 92%.

Given the fact that in Week 35 sustained community transmission of the Delta variant was declared at national level, deaths caused by COVID-19 recorded from S 36 onwards are considered to be caused by this variant, except in situations where other VOCs are detected (Beta, Gamma, Omicron or others, emerging).

Confirmed cases with the Delta variant

Until December 5, 2021, 5160 cases with the Delta variant were confirmed, of which 160 in week 48.

To date, of the 5160 cases with the Delta variant, the AY.77 sub-variant was detected in 4.2 (1,5%).

Vaccination remains the best solution for protection against COVID-19!

By vaccination against COVID-19:

  • the risk of infection is reduced;
  • the risk of virus transmission is reduced;
  • the risk of hospitalization is considerably reduced;
  • the risk of death is considerably reduced."
